Sensitive Skin Care - Guidelines for Coping
60Sensitive skin care requires a sensible approach. Unfortunately, not everyone enjoys supple and healthy skin. Fortunately, however, most people can follow a few basic guidelines that will help them have clear and even beautiful skin.
It's hard to simply overlook or ignore the symptoms of sensitive skin – redness and irritation, swelling, tight, blotchy, itchy skin. It doesn't feel good, it doesn't look good, and it impacts negatively our whole quality of life. Sensitive skin can make you a wallflower or a hermit if you let it. It can keep you from going out, getting involved, socializing, and living life to the fullest.
Sure there are worse things that can happen to a person than having sensitive skin, but this is one thing that doesn't have to make you miserable. You can do something about it!
The trick is to educate yourself about skin care. And I don't mean going back to school, necessarily (though that may be something you might like to do when you start to look and feel your best). You can start by understanding that your skin may overreact to external toxins or food allergens, moreso than someone with normal skin sensitivity. So rule number one is to learn what things your skin doesn't like and avoid them.
So avoiding that which is bad is a good idea. Take the sun, for example. Many of us love the sun because it feels good, for a while, and it makes us look good, even healthy,, but again, for a while. when that while is over, it makes us feel pain (sunburn), and it turns our skin to leather by drying it out. This drying out process damages your skin and makes it more prone to wrinkles, premature aging, and possibly skin cancer down the road (years into the future). If you have senstive skin, it will make you sensitive skin symptoms (see above) all the worse. Dry skin is always bad and you should do everything possible to keep it from getting dry.
Along the same lines of avoiding that which is bad, dust and environmental pollutants will wreak havoc on your sensitive skin and should be avoided by wearing protective garments and using a hypoallergenic moisturizer. Alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods are known to increase skin sensitivity and should be limited.
Make your skin healthier and more resistant to damage from the inside out. That is, by drinking lots of water every day, as well as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Along with clean water, these help correct imbalances in your skin, increase skin hydration, and make you look your best.
There are various substances that can be applied to your skin to help nourish it and protect it from damage. Some skin creams containing antioxidants, amino acids, and wakame kelp can help renew your skin. Ph-neutral, fragrance-free cleansers are better choices than commercial sopas which tend to be harsh and rough on the skin.
Skin care products containing the natural preservative, Vitamin E, are worth looking into, as are those containing plant or botanical extracts.
Something everyone considering buying a skin care product should be aware of, especially if you have sensitive skin, is to be wary of products advertised as "all natural skin care" or “sensitive skin care” products, especially if those phrases appear on cosmetics labels. The tiniest amount of an ingredient can be used in a formulation so that the product can be called "all natural" or for "sensitive skin." Don't be fooled by what the product is called. Examine the label to make sure there are no harmful ingredients included in the product along with the minimal amount of "all natural" or "sensitive" ingredients.
This is not to say that all skin care product labels are misleading. There are many good ones that will help improve your skin tone, texture and appearance. Just do your due diligence. Don't be led astray by fancy packaging and marketing. Read the ingredients label carefully and compare and contrast with other products before you decide to purchase.
If you can obtain a small free sample of a product you are interested in, go for it. If there are no free samples, but the merchant is offering a 100% money back guarantee, and it is a product that seems to fit your needs, order it. whe you get it, do a small test by applying a tiny amount behind your ear. Leave it on for a few hours. This way you will see for yourself whether your skin experiences an allergic reaction to the product.
Sensitive skin care begins with basic good skin care. Avoid that which harms your skin, and do that which helps your skin become healthy. Treat your body right and your skin will love the new balance and show it by getting healthy and radiant looking younger.
